Does anyone else remember that oatmeal jingle from when we were kids? Where they just sing the word warm over and over again to a catchy little tune? I really adore a good jingle, or any kind of clever ad campaign, and I watched way too much television as a kid, so quite a few of these gems are permanently embedded in my brain.
Here, let me see if I can get all multi-media on you and record a little recording of me singing the jingle, and you can see if you remember it:
Anybody? Anybody?
Well, perhaps I should tell you why I mention this old jingle? Because I keep singing it to myself. Because today, for the first time ever, I am writing to you with warm hands. Let’s pause for a moment and let that soak in, shall we? Warm. Hands. Also known as sheer and utter bliss.
We live in a big old house with no insulation. Old original leaky windows. My desk is right next to a window and up against an outside wall. We’ve been meaning to blow in insulation for years but keep waiting until we can get the rewiring done first, and there’s also an addition we want to build, and does it make sense to bother insulating before we do the addition? I just don’t know.
Until we solve those larger conundrums, it’s cold in here. I finally got fed up with my hands being freezing all the time, and this morning I installed a little space heater under my desk. Sounds simple enough, but to get it in the right position I had to put it up on a chair with a stool bottom up on top of that and a then box turned over on the stool and a piece of wood on top of the box. After all that it’s finally at just the right height to blow delicious hot air on my hands all day.
I’m slightly panicking about the electric bill and feeling more than a little guilty about what I suspect could be a potential giant carbon suck (especially in the face of some friends’ very cool project to go without electricity for a weekend), but I am also warm, so I am happy, so I am having a Much Better Day than I might otherwise have had. And that might cost a little more on the electric bill, and that might be taking a little more from the planet than I’d ideally like to take, but I am really enjoying it. Yay, warmth!

Cold hands are miserable. Use the energy. It’s not like you’re running it all day and night.
No, just all day
Thanks for the vote of encouragement. I’m really just so much happier with warm hands that it’s astonishing. I am going to try some other insulating measures as well, I think. Stay tuned.

Aw, thanks, Malcolm! I do sincerely appreciate your blessing, and I’ve come to the same conclusion. The computer, my light and the heater are the only things on all day, and at least I’m not driving a car to get to work every day. Still need to get on the insulating, though. I’ll see if I can get Andy to help me with it this weekend. I hope your Power Off weekend is going great!
