Day 23: I can go backwards

by Darcy on November 23, 2009

So Friday night was the beginning of a new era. The era in which our heroine hula hoops herself back to the slim trim figure she enjoyed for her 20s and at least some of her 30s. Or at least hula hoops herself into a regular fun exercise routine that doesn’t involve getting itchy (although, it does make my waist a little itchy where the hoop touches me, but it’s not terrible because I only do it for maybe 10 minutes at a go so far).

Today’s milestone: I hula hooped in the opposite direction for a few minutes at a go several different times. Meaning my normal way to hula hoop would be the hoop goes to my left at first or counter-clockwise around my waist. And today I got it going to my right at first and clockwise around my waist. Hey, after 2 days of laying around feeling cruddy getting nothing accomplished, clockwise hula hooping feels pretty exciting.

I want to make a little video of me hula hooping to post here on the blog, but at the moment I cannot because that would entail making visible the insanely cluttered space that is my living room (lots of stuff is on its way out but is stuck here for the moment). I like the idea of keeping a record of how basic what I can do now is and show the progression to the (I hope) fancier stuff that I’ll be able to do later.

Something else interesting to note: Friday night when I just started, I was walking around, turning inside the hoop, having a blast. Over the weekend (Sunday morning?) I watched some videos and read some forum posts that suggested that those things might be hard for new people. And today they seem just a little harder to do. Damn the power of suggestion. I think I’ll stay away from trying to learn anything else and just focus on having fun for now.

Oh, and did I mention the deep muscle soreness I had on Sunday from Friday night’s hula hooping? So clearly it’s doing something. Has anyone else out there tried hula hooping as an alternative to boring old sit-ups and whatnot?

I haven’t hula’d for many years. But I’ve noticed that whenever I do it, it makes me laugh. Which is a very good thing.
