Please, God, let there be another Lynda Barry fan who reads this post and gets the title. The rest of you: please get The Lynda Barry Experience CD and experience the joy that is Lynda.
For yesterday, I have nothing much external to show for myself. A couple chapters read in a book (Malcolm Gladwell’s newest). A couple hours knitting (shhh, it’s a present). A couple errands, a blog post, journal writing, some email managed.
Today, even less. I watched some absolute drivel TV show about slutty druggie teenagers, and no, I would not be watching it if it didn’t have British accents. But I did have a phone call with Jen Hoffman.
A while ago, somewhere after the whole school thing blew up, I decided that I needed some help. I have a bunch of changes I want to make in my life, and struggling in solitude was pretty much getting me nowhere. So was born the idea of Team Darx. I keep meaning to tell y’all about it, but I haven’t. I’ll say more about it soon, how’s that?
One of the first recruits was Jen. Doctors get other doctors to write their prescriptions, lawyers don’t represent themselves in court (if they’re smart), and therapists sure as heck get some therapy of their own. Ergo, an organizer hiring an organizer just makes sense. And finally, I’d found an organizer who seemed to think the way I do (only to find out she has a very different, and frankly much more powerful, approach than I ever took). A me for me! Working with her has resulted in some amazing shifts. I promise to gush more about her later.
Now, though, I want to skip ahead to telling you how Jen especially blew my mind today. Honestly, the entirety of it is too much to write about (see post title), but here’s the main takeaway point that I’m wrapping my brain around:
I have permission to do what is easiest and most fun.
Whoa. I’ve had glimmers of that idea in the past. Other brilliant people have said things to me or in general that were similar. But something about the way Jen phrased it today, so clearly and plainly in the context of our conversation, was very powerful. I have so much more to say (the urge to disclaim, it is strong), but I think that’s all I can manage for now. I need to hang out with the idea more, make friends with it.
I will say one more thing. She even made me a fabulous little certificate (thanks, Jen!). That is so going up on the wall.

Did you say Lynda Barry? She’s one of my all-star coolest people ever. She just did the weekly Pep Talk for National Novel Writing Month. Here it is: http://www.nanowrimo.org/files/main/Lynda%20Barry%20pep%20talk_0.pdf
